Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Packaging Solutions : Lightweight, Low Heat Transference, and Cost Effective
Did you know that at least nine different people handle the average package in distribution before arriving at its destination? With each “hand” is an opportunity for your temperature-sensitive shipment to be exposed to temperatures that can change the efficacy of your medications or spoil foods.
EPS Packaging is the ideal solutions for shipping vaccines, meat, poultry, fish, blood, or anything temperature-sensitive for several reasons. The following are some great reasons why EPS is ideal for cold chain shipments.
Storage conditions are essential for temperature-sensitive medications
Experts have carefully prescribed and set the storage conditions for a medical product to preserve its efficacy during the life cycle. If these settings are not correct, there may result in loss of assay; the presence of impurities within the solution which can lead to dissolution or reduction if layers upon liquid products (such as pills), the solid dosage will become powders due to tiny granules sinking at different rates than lighter molecules rise through them. This is known as “Floatation competence,”; discoloration because dark-colored substances like coffee might turn pale pink while bleach metabolizes into weaker forms that no longer absorb UV radiation, so it doesn’t damage cells but merely creates ugly stains on surfaces.

Storage conditions are essential for temperature-sensitive foods
Packaging technologies have improved rapidly, allowing pre-packaged food to stay fresher for longer. This is a big reason consumers buy convenience foods like breakfast cereals and unprepared ingredients that they can easily cook at home with minimal washing up afterward! However, many temperature controlled (TCS) foods must be kept at a consistent temperature, either ambient (room temperature), refrigerated or frozen.
The list of TCS foods is extensive, but it’s important to remember that these items must be appropriately stored for them not only to stay fresh longer—but also to maintain their safety. Foods such as milk and dairy products; eggs (including dried); meat ( beef, pork & lamb), poultry fish shellfish crustaceans, soy protein sprouts, melons cut tomatoes, unprocessed garlic-and oil mixtures, cooked rice beans vegetables – all need controlled temperatures or they’ll spoil quickly after purchase.
Why Is EPS Ideal for Cold Chain Packaging?
EPS, specifically EPS coolers, are designed using a rigid cellular plastic, 90% of which is composed of air bubbles. This makes them extra lightweight resulting in lower shipping costs than denser solutions. However, the main reason the EPS is a crucial solution for temperature-sensitive shipping is its ability to retain temperatures over extended periods.
We are not just talking about the coolers you take to the beach to keep your beers cold. Today’s coolers, coupled with cold gel packs, can hold temperatures for 144 hours. That’s a whole week of temperature stability that can allow you to ship products clear across the country.
- Perfect for ambient, cold, or deep-freeze applications
- EPS offers high shock resistance for bumpy roads or turbulent flights
- Highly resistant to chemicals, moisture, and insects
